The Ashoka table lamp is one of the of several designs produced by Ettore Sottsass for Memphis Group. Among other important Sottsass designs for the Memphis Group are the Carlton shelf, and the Casablanca sideboard. Sottsass selected Ashoka as the name for this lamp in reference to his extensive travels to India during the 60s and 70s and in honor to the Indian buddhist emperor of the Maurya dynasty Ashoka.
